IF THERE BE NO RESURRECTION
Text: I Corinthians 15:12-19
Intro: Some of the members at Corinth didn’t believe in the resurrection of Jesus. It is surprising how many members of a church do not know what they believe or why. You can’t get them to study the Bible. Therefore, they do not stand for anything. This person usual will fall for anything. Paul was teaching by supposition. If what some of the members believed was true, then other things are true. Paul lists 6 things that are true, if there be no resurrection of the dead. He makes a powerful point in his reasoning and shows them the folly of not believing in the resurrection.
I. CHRIST IS NOT RISEN. V13
A. The truth

1. If there be no resurrection then something else is very true.

2. Christ is not risen, if there is no resurrection of the dead. If Christ were not resurrected, then we will not be resurrected.

3. Truth demands that we use knowledge and wisdom in verifying it.
B. The trouble

1. When people try to teach heresy or false doctrine, they will have trouble proving it.

2. John teaches us not to believe every spirit, but try the spirits to see if they are of God or not. We are to try the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world. I John 4:1

3. Nothing that we do as believers makes any sense if there be no resurrection of the dead.
C. The testimony

1. The Lord was declared by the angels to have risen from the dead. Matthew 28:6

2. Jesus was seen by the women and the 12 apostles and above 500 at one time. I Corinthians 15:6

3. We know that the Lord lives because He saved our souls from sin and death.
II. OUR PREACHING IS VAIN. V14
A. The truth

1. If there is no resurrection of the dead than our preaching is vain.

2. Vain means useless or void. Preaching doesn’t do any good if there is no resurrection from the dead.
B. The trouble

1. The Lord has promised to bless His Word as it is preached. Isaiah 55:11 It will accomplish what He pleases and prosper where He sends it.

2. If what some of the Corinthians said were true, than all preaching is useless.

3. There is a big problem with that because God has given us His Word. He has called preachers to preach His Word.
C. The testimony

1. The preaching of the cross is the power of God to all who believe. I Corinthians 1:18

2. We have seen and do testimony the blessings of God on the preaching of His Word.

3. The New Testament is an illustration book on the good that the preaching of God’s Word does.
III. YOUR FAITH IS VAIN. V14
A. The truth

1. If there is no resurrection of the dead, then your faith is also vain.

2. The faith you put in Jesus Christ to save you and forgive you of sins is useless and empty.

3. Paul told the jailor to believe on the Lord Jesus and you shall be saved. Acts 16:31
B. The trouble

1. Your faith means nothing, if there is no resurrection of the dead.

2. Those who believe or put their faith in Jesus are not condemned, but those who do not believe are already condemned. John 3:18

3. If what they believed is true, there is no reason to preach repentance of sin and faith in Jesus Christ.
C. The testimony

1. We as Paul can say, I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him. II Timothy 1:12

2. Those who put their faith in Jesus have peace with God. Romans 5:1 We have so much by faith in Jesus.
IV. WE ARE FALSE WITNESSES. V15
A. The truth

1. If there is no resurrection, then we are false witnesses. We have testified that Jesus arose from the dead.

2. John referred to many false prophets going out into the world. I John 4:1

3. If we preach the resurrection of Jesus and He didn’t come forth from the grave, we are false witnesses.
B. The trouble

1. These people who didn’t believe in the resurrection were saying in effect that Paul and the others were false witnesses.

2. The lost say we are crazy. We say they are crazy. Who is right?

3. Truth is not a relative thing. Someone is right and someone is wrong.
C. The testimony

1. Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32

2. The Holy Spirit convicts people of the truth about sin, judgment, and righteousness. John 16:7-11

V. YOU ARE YET IN YOUR SINS. V17
A. The truth

1. Those who repent of sin and believe in Jesus are saved and their sins are forgiven.

2. Study what Paul wrote to the Ephesians in Ephesians 1:7. In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

2. Our sins have been forgiven and cleansed in the blood of Jesus Christ.
VI. THOSE FALLEN ASLEEP IN CHRIST ARE PERISHED. V18
A. The truth

1. All of our saved loved ones have died in Jesus and have the hope or expectation of being with Him in our new home.

2. Jesus is our hope. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8

3. Jesus came forth victorious from the grave. The angel said, He is not here; for He is risen.
B. The trouble

If there is no resurrection, then all of our saved loved ones have died and perished.

They have no hope. There is not comfort or consolation in Christ Jesus.

There would be no need of living according to God’s Word if there is no resurrection
from the dead.
C. The testimony

The saved have a hope that not even physical death can destroy.

Jesus has promised us a home where we will live with Him forever. John 14:1-3

Paul wrote I Thessalonians 4:13-18. We are to comfort one another with these words.

Intro: Paul tells the Ephesian fathers to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Under the Jewish law the fathers were to teach the children in every day experiences. It has been proven that children do learn a lot of things from their parents and especially the father. This demands that a father teach and train his children in the ways of the Lord. The father is to provide the spiritual leadership for his children. He must not allow others to do what the Lord expects him to do.
